Airshows: Becoming a part of it, if only for a day

Updated: Mar 29

For me, the love for airshows isn’t just about watching planes; it’s about immersing myself in the experience of aviation. The smell of jet fuel, the feel of cold metal under my fingertips, and the chance to connect with the pilots and aircrews who make it all possible—these are the things that fuel my passion.

There’s a unique magic in seeing these machines in person. Not just the newer models that grab my attention; it’s the vintage military aircraft as well. There’s something awe-inspiring about sta

nding next to a World War II bomber or a Cold War-era jet. These planes carry stories of bravery, history, and sacrifice, and seeing them up close reminds me of the incredible feats they accomplished in the skies.

One of the highlights of any airshow is the chance to meet the men and women who fly these machines. These conversations are always fascinating. Listening intently as pilots share tales of their training, missions, and the unforgettable moments that come with flying some of the world’s most advanced aircraft. The camaraderie is evident in every conversation. Whether it’s a friendly handshake, a shared laugh, or a quick briefing about a specific aircraft’s features, the bond between pilots, crew, and enthusiasts like me is palpable.

Spending an entire day under the sun at an airshow can leave me with a red face and sore shoulders, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. There’s something about being out there, feeling the warmth of the sun, surrounded by fellow enthusiasts, that makes the whole experience feel like an adventure. The bright blue skies above, the vibrant planes streaking through the air, and the energy of the crowd—it all comes together in a symphony of excitement. Yes, the sunburns are a small price to pay, but they’re a badge of honor, a reminder of the day I spent in awe of aviation.

The love for airshows runs deep. It’s not just about the planes, the technology, or the performances—it’s about the connection to something greater. It’s about the history of aviation, the human spirit that drives us to reach new heights, and the shared enthusiasm of people who live and breathe flight. Every airshow is a chance to reconnect with that passion, to feel the adrenaline rush as I watch a plane soar overhead, and to be reminded of how incredible it is to witness such feats of human achievement. Yes, I live in America and America loves it’s cries of “freedom”, but it’s hard to not be moved and emotional about these days, being surrounded by so many machines and crews that ensure our freedom in this way. Truly.

If you've never been to an airshow, I encourage you to experience it for yourself. The roar of jet engines, the interaction with pilots, the smell of fuel, and the thrill of watching these magnificent machines in action are memories that will stay with you long after the last plane has landed. Every airshow is not just a celebration of aviation, but a tribute to the men and women who make it possible, and an experience I’ll never grow tired of.
